History
Westport has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. In 1648 English colonists known as the “Bankside Farmers” settled on land in the Greens Farms area of town and built Westport into a prosperous farming community.
In the 1840s immigrants from around the world found themselves in Westport building the railroad that now connects the town to New York City, making it a sought after suburban community. Westport has also been home to notable artists, writers, and actors including The Great Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald, actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, and entrepreneur and television personality, Martha Stewart.
What to Expect
Westport’s public beaches, state parks, and impeccable downtown eateries are major draws for both residents and out-of-towners.
In the heart of Westport downtown you’ll find narrow roads lined with smaller, historic homes. Farther out, lie larger, stately residences on multiple acres of land. Closer to the Long Island Sound are small beach communities, all within walking distance to Westport’s public beaches.

- Westport is only a 50 minute train ride from Grand Cental Station in NYC.
- The Town Seal depicts Westport as it existed in 1835, looking west over the State Street Bridge (currently known as the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Memorial Bridge).
- Westport was the location of the fictional residence (1164 Morning Glory Circle) of Darrin and Samantha Stephens on the television series Bewitched.
- Compo Beach, also known to residents as “Compo” was originally named Compaug, and can be traced back to the early Paugussett tribe and means the bear’s fishing ground.

On Wednesday evenings, Westport Astronomical Society volunteers at the Rolnick Observatory will show you the heavens up close through Connecticut’s largest public telescope.
