After living in Manhattan for nearly 15 years, my husband and I thought it was time to move back to our rootsā€¦ Connecticut. But the question that raced through our minds was “which town?”.

I was born and raised in northern Fairfield County surrounded by acres of land, lots of privacy, and a slow, quiet lifestyle that only the town of Redding could offer. My husband, on the other hand, grew up in a much more city-like town that offered many more conveniences and things to do.

After much discussion, we ultimately decided on Westport as our new home. Here are 5 reasons we chose to move to Westport.

  1. Proximity to NYC
  2. Schools
  3. The beach
  4. Foodie culture
  5. The vibe

Proximity to New York City

Westport is intersected east to west by Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway making it an easy commute by car into New York City. Additionally, peak trains to and from Grand Central Terminal are about 60 minutes; giving commuters ample time to do some work or unwind from the day.

Westport schools

Westportā€™s five elementary schools and two middle schools feed into the top ranked Staples High School. The school district was recently announced as the No. 1 district in Connecticut and 28th in the country for the 2019-20 school year by Niche

The beach

Westportā€™s coastal vibe is one of the major draws for people moving to the area. Westport residents can enjoy beach access to the Long Island Sound that in-land Connecticut residents donā€™t have easy access to.

Also, between three of Westportā€™s main beaches (Compo, Longshore, and Sherwood) you can take advantage of activities that go beyond sun-worshipping, including kayaking, pickleball, tennis, golf, and a beautiful marina for sailing.

Foodie culture

Because of Westportā€™s proximity to New York City, you will find some well known restaurateurs opening up eateries around town, including Chef Bill Taibe, a New York Times all-star, receiving three ā€œexcellentā€ ratings from the publication all by the age of 33.

Some other great restaurants to try around town include OKO and The Cottage, both from acclaimed chef Brian Lewis.

The Vibe

Westport has a laid-back ambiance with a strong cultural back-bone.

Beyond the slew of high-end shopping and eateries, the town also offers year-round cultural offerings.
The renowned Westport Country Playhouse and the Westport Community Theater both have numerous performances throughout the year. If youā€™re a music fan, you can choose from the 50 free summer concerts at the Levitt Pavilion; and the newly opened MoCA Westport is a great place to take in art and live performances.

Overall, Westport was a great move for me and my husband coming from years living in the city. So, if you’re interested in checking out Westport for yourself, reach out to me! Iā€™m a licensed real estate agent helping couples and families make the move to the Fairfield County area.
