History

Fairfield is one of Connecticut’s oldest towns, founded in 1639 by immigrants from England looking for a place to create a farming village centered around Puritan beliefs. Fairfield’s original boundaries covered what are now the towns of Westport, Redding, Easton, Weston, and parts of Bridgeport. 

Fairfield prospered during the 1700’s as a thriving and affluent farming town. It became a destination for those seeking out skilled craftsmen and laborers who produced goods and services for the townspeople. Fairfield became a centerpiece of The Revolutionary War, during which the British attack in 1779 left much of the town in ashes. There were only several homes that survived the attack, five of which are still standing today along Old Post Road and Beach Road.

What to Expect

Located on five miles of shoreline, Fairfield is home to two universities (Sacred Heart and Fairfield University), as well as many marinas and parks. Farmer’s markets, tree lightings, music festivals, fireworks, one of New England’s largest book sales, beaches, and hiking are only a selection of the events and attractions in Fairfield.

Enjoy an event at the Quick Center

Get fit at the Sportsplex

The Fairfield Sportsplex is a campus of unique athletic and recreational facilities that deliver activities from rock climbing to ice hockey, to pilates to soccer. While you’re there, grab a bite at the onsite Local Kitchen or a drink at the Craft Beer Bar.

Take a glimpse into historic Fairfield at the Ogden House

The Ogden House is a typical mid-18th century farmhouse that escaped the burning of Fairfield by British forces during the American Revolution. It provides a glimpse into the life of a family of the “middling sort.”

Splash or hike at Lake Mohegan

During the summer months you can enjoy a splash at the Lake Mohegan beach, or a bite to eat from one of the various food trucks that park in the area. Year round you can enjoy a hike over the 170.4 acres at Lake Mohegan recreational area.

Have some fun in the sun at one of Fairfield’s beaches

Fairfield has five miles of coastline along five beaches with a variety of exciting and family-friendly activities available. Entrance to all five Fairfield beaches is free and open to the public but Memorial Day Saturday to Labor Day, a beach sticker is required to park.

Colony Grill

Colony Grill is a go-to favorite of Connecticut pizza connoisseurs. Its only menu offering is a thin-crust pizza that is best served with the signature “hot oil” topping.
